Those Who Watch!

Just read an article where Jon Hamm of "Mad Men" and other actors were attacking reality stars like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton for making millions without any discernible talent.  I agree, of course, but don't condemn the f****** idiots (quoting Hamm) who make the millions but rather the f***** idiot millions who watch this junk. What can we expect in a country where a major candidate for the Republican nomination condemns higher education and calls Obama a snob for supporting college for all our citizens.  (As an aside why doesn't someone just ask Santorum if any of his children are going to college or will go to college.)

Sadly though, a chicken in every pot, or in this case a college degree in every hand, won't make a difference.  Check the numbers.  American students are at the bottom of the barrel in almost all academic fields and giving them a college degree isn't going to change that.  I taught at Queens College during the war between England and Argentina thirty years ago, and the vast majority of my students (other than those students who were born in other countries) hadn't a clue where Argentina was located. Most couldn't name our vice president or secretary of state. No surprise than when twenty five years later Sarah Palin didn't know who was head of the British government. No doubt she could name the Grammy winners as my students could in the 80's.

We've lost our position in the world, and anyone who believes it's coming back are fools.  The only thing that keeps us at the top is our military might, not our intellectual might, and from this lefist's view that's nothing to be proud of.  And yes, I do know I ended my sentence with a preposition.  It's the only thing left I can protest about!
