Romney said yesterday at a press conference, with respect to Obama's decision to invade foreign territory to kill Bin Laden, that he would have done the same. He added, "even Jimmy Carter would have done it." Jimmy Carter risked and lost his presidency when he did what Obama did, sent U.S. forces into Iran to release the hostages. In Carter's case it didn't work. Was that his fault? Of course not, unless you think he shouldn't have gone after the hostages. (I'll leave that discussion for another day.) He didn't screw up; the generals did.
An additional note. Jimmy Carter served ten years in the U.S. Navy, a good many of them on submarines. Romney served no time in the Armed Services; instead he went to France to recruit for the Mormon Church. I suppose if someone is born a Mormon, like Romney, and has been adequately brainwashed, one can understand (a bit) his belief in a religion of such ridiculous proportions. But recruiting in France, the infamously rational French. How did he get into, let alone graduate from, Harvard?
And . . . In his campaign in 2007, Obama said (and I certainly disagreed) that if he couldn't rely on Pakistan to get Bin Laden, he would do it without their permission. In his campaign for the Republican nomination, also in 2007, Romney disagreed absolutely with Obama's statement. Said, without hesitation, that Obama didn't understand foreign relationships, that he, Romney, would not go it alone. Does this man ever stick with anything, other than Anne?
And whether I agree with Obama's decision (I don't), it took political courage to go after Bin Laden knowing what happened to Jimmy Carter when the Iran mission went awry.
