Semi-Retired

I'm putting my blog to rest for a bit, letting go of politics.  I've given up believing that there's any sign of intelligent life in this country. The very rich, for whom unions are the enemy, funded the campaign against Scott Walker, but the workers, whether union or not, voted him back in. When Miguel and I owned our houses in the Catskills, in Margaretville and Roxbury, N.Y., we always remarked on the locals and their politics--mainly Republican, conservative, and racist, in that we couldn't understand how they could vote against their own interests. We hired many locals while living there, to plaster, painter, roof, etc. A good percentage of them only worked in the summers when the New York Liberals hired them to work on their homes. The remainder of the year they were on welfare, yet they consistently voted Republican and hated blacks and hispanics for taking from the welfare state.

I often worked from home, and once when we were having the inside of our house painted, I could hear Rush Limbaugh spouting off against the welfare state. The painter in the next room lived in a trailer and on welfare every winter. He was recently divorced and living with his former sister-in-law. His brother was living with the painter's  ex-wife. How did I know this?  He confided in Miguel (everyone confided in Miguel). This man, and his born-again Christian lifestyle, has come to represent the country I live in, the country that hates European socialists.

So, I'm off to do some real writing.  See you after the elections, or not.
