All calories are not equal!

Very occasionally I write about something not political and today is one of those days.  The recent medical findings, touted in articles all over the web, that all calories are not equal was nice to read to confirm what I and so many women have known for decades.  But really did we need confirmation that eating bread, pasta (any type), potatoes, rice puts the pounds on.  In the recent study, a group of overweight people were put on strict diets to help them lose 5 to 10 percent of their weight.  Then they were divided into three groups, with three different diets:  one was a low-fat, high carb diet, one was an Atkins-like diet (high in protein and fat), and one was a low glycemic diet, all dieters consuming the same number of calories.  Those on the low-fat diets had the most trouble maintaining their weight.  Those on the Atkins-like diet had the least trouble maintaining their new weight.  The low glycemic diet was somewhere in the middle.  In fact, those on the Atkins-like diet used 350 more calories in energy than those on the low-fat diet.  Those on the low glycemic diet used 150 more calories.  My conclusion, a bit self-serving I admit, is butter is good for you.  I'm off to fry an egg in butter and feeling self-righteous!
