The Dirty War and Francis

Today there is more news about the new pope and his role during the Dirty War in Argentina.  He has been accused by some as being complicit with the military and by others as having done nothing to object to the horrible treatment of so many of Argentine's citizens by the military, including throwing prisoners out of planes while still alive. This included two French nuns, and we know the attitude of the paternal church towards nuns. That Francis I wasn't actively and loudly condemning the junta is enough criticism for me.  I'm reminded of what we learned about Benedict when he was elected, that he had joined the Nazi youth movement, reason alone that he should not have been elected pope.  Whether they (I speak of both Benedict and Francis) were naive or not, doesn't matter. Their records are not clean and they immediately become suspect with people like me who are not blinded by pomp and tradition. Would Francis have done anything to save gays during the Dirty War, considering the ugly comments he's made about gays in his past? I have my doubts. The paternal Catholic Church has sealed its own fate in its election of another conservative pope. It will continue to wither and die. I just wish it would hurry up!

  2. I'm rather consumed these days with an upcoming trip to Europe: seven days on the Queen Mary 2, then the remainder of May in Paris/Spain, and then a month in Venice. Lucky me! I've spent most of the last month thinking about clothes, trying them on, discarding them, and then trying them again. I once described myself as a frivolous socialist, and I suspect that's a fairly apt description. I will comment later today or tomorrow on the death of Margaret Thatcher. I'm always sorry when anyone dies, even those I view as evil, whether in intent or ignorance, but it didn't seem the right thing to write about her negatively on the day she died. I needed a few days to get some perspective.
