(CNN) -- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour offered his support Friday for an amendment to the state constitution that would define life as beginning at the moment of conception, saying he cast his absentee ballot for the measure despite struggling with its implications. That one can vote to define the beginning of life reminds me of the time I was doing consulting work for AT&T. Our less than brilliant AT&T team leader held a two hour meeting to decide if we should use round or square bullet points in our documents and, as a bonus, insisted we also vote to decide if a gerund is a noun or a verb. With one exception (guess who) the almighty verb won. As I remember, her politics were definitely Tea Party-ish in tone, even before the Tea Party came into existence. Perhaps soon, the Tea Party will submit a constitutional amendment defining the earth as flat. Considering how poorly Americans fare in international tests in science and mathematics, I predict that the amendment would pass.
