Etch-A-Sketch!

Every conservative who has evaluated Romney's performance last night says he won the debate because he followed a strategy, to not ruffle feathers.  This appears to be where our country has landed:  principles don't count; it's all about strategy.  It seems to make no difference to Republicans that Romney supported all of Obama's policies, when just a few weeks ago he took opposite positions.

Is it all about strategy?  Do those who vote Republican care about anything other than winning.  The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that winning and power are  basic tenets of American virtue, and I don't exclude Democrats.. Think about it.  The Olympics is a case in point.  I can't remember watching an Olympics where American commentators did not emphasize how many metals were won by Americans.  It's always about winning and power, rather than celebrating the sports and those who participate in those sports, whether or not they win metals.

I connect the dots.  Think of Joe Paterno and his myopia in overlooking clear evidence that one of his coaches was abusing young boys.  The why, so he could keep on winning footballs games.  Lance Armstrong, the great American hero, is another.  The evidence that Armstrong was doping was available years ago.  The French press and other foreign press pointed this out clearly long before Americans accepted the truth.  I remember having a discussion with two of my nephews at least eight years ago about Armstrong and doping.  Both were highly critical of the Irish swimmer who was winning gold--that it was impossible that she could have improved so dramatically, but were in total denial that Armstrong, the American, had also improved dramatically, and after cancer treatment no less.

I hope I'm wrong.  I want to be wrong.   Please America prove me wrong.  Don't give the White House to a man who will do or say anything to win.  We were once better than that, and we can be so again.
