"Why?" is the question I most often ask myself whenever I listen to Mitt Romney speak. Why is he so close in the polls, why is Obama not running 20 to 30 points ahead of Romney? It's not that I'm one of Obama's great admirers--he's far too centrist for me to like him, and much too hesitant to propose policies that will help America regain respect around the world and, more important, provide better living conditions for the poor and disadvantaged in America. But Romney and Obama, neck and neck in the polls! Something underlies this close race that has nothing to do with policy.
Romney changes his positions on everything depending on his audience and what he thinks will fly on a particular day. It's true that politicians do this more often than the rest of us, but Romney is the gold standard for flip flops. There is absolutely no way that any of his supporters can know what he will do when he's in the White House: will he get us involved in another war? He certainly threatened to do so when he visited Israel in the summer. Will he turn the clock back on women's rights? He certainly suggested he would so this when he was running for the Republican nomination. Yet in all three of his debates with Obama he moved to the center from the far right without a blush.
I have come to only one conclusion as I believe there's only one conclusion I can come to. The hatred of Obama is primarily concerned with his race. When you consider the people who favor Romney, most of whom would be far better off with a Democrat in office, there really is only one conclusion. They can't abide the thought of a black family in the White House. If I ever had any doubts of this, last night's debate settled it for me. Romney hugged every one of Obama's positions, all of which he had questioned in the past, usually at the top of his lungs. Yet, today he's equal with Obama in the polls or ahead.
If you're thinking of voting for Romney, I can only ask that you examine your conscience: ask yourself why you would vote for a man who not once in his political career has taken a position and stuck with it. So why would you vote for him. Really, why?
