“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat, or a prostitute.” ― Rebecca West, The Young Rebecca: Writings, 1911-1917

How Quickly It Changes!
I was thinking today about the tragedy of the Costa Concordia and the personal tragedy of Francesco Schettino, its captain. No doubt any one reading here will challenge my use of the word tragedy with respect to Schettino, changing it to "cowardice" or "incompetence." But it's a tragedy as well and it says so much about life itself. I imagine that shortly before the Costa Concordia went down with massive loss of life and property that Schettino was on top of the world. Deferred to by everyone in the small city he commanded--the women flirtatious and the men envious, he's now despised by the world. He'll never recover his job or his reputation, and most likely he'll go to prison, perhaps for as long as 12 years. And all because he had to show off, going off course to signal friends on the island of Giglio. I'm not sure if there's a lesson to be learned from this other than to enjoy one's good fortune while you may. It disappears so quickly!
