Mckayla Maroney, crowned queen of the vault by the American media, before she won the gold medal lost to a Romanian, one we assume who wanted the gold as much as McKayla. I was very disappointed that McKayla sat down on her second vault but even more disappointed with her behavior after she lost, particularly on the podium. Of course, she was disappointed but her behavior shamed her and her country. Everyone wants to win and no one is crowned until you stand on the top spot of the podium. That's life!
I suspect that much of McKayla's disappointment was prompted by the American press and American coaches. Right before she took her second vault, the American announcer for NBC had her crowned with gold. No one according to him could possibly beat her--she was the best in the world, fantastic, etc. It would be nice to hear a little humility from American journalists. I'm not in the least surprised that so many people dislike us around the world. We all know people that are full of themselves, some for good reason and some for no reason, but strangely we often dislike the ones who have reason more than those who don't. Those we just laugh at. Humility is a great virtue, and I hope if McKayla completes in the next Olympics she's as gracious when she loses as when she wins.
I get the sense that Mckayla Maroney is going to end up as the bitchiest one of some "Real Housewives" at one point in the future.
